Jessica Boateng is a Textile Designer who was born and raised in
Nottingham and is currently studying BA (Hons) in Textile Design at the University of Derby. Her main concept is
based on her own interpretation and visual language of her identity. For
example, her personality, surroundings, culture, precious memories, deepest
thoughts, etc. She is passionate about communicating elements from her
autobiographical experiences within her practice. This is where she feels she
has a voice and can finally be herself.
Her Ghanaian heritage was what developed her big
fascination in colour and textiles. Jessica’s main specialities are drawing,
painting, embroidery and textiles. Every now and then, she challenges her
artistic abilities to evolve her practice and ends up enhancing new and
exciting skills. For example, batik, felt making and printmaking. For a
perfectionist, she has this enthusiastic mind-set to create elegance and style
into her work to portray her distinctive individuality. Which results in it
appearing feminine, quirky and full of character.
Jessica can sometimes look at Frida Kahlo, Yinka Shonibare, Grayson Perry for inspiration. They influenced her to be brave, authentic and honest with her meanings and messages. Also, to create how she’s feeling, where she’s come from and what she’s been through within her art.
